Lost Rolex Reveals 2% Delivery Package Loss Rate

In a recent incident reported on the Weibo account of Henan TV, Mr. Shi from Jilin Province sought help from a television program after his valuable Rolex watch, worth nearly RMB380,000, went missing during shipment through SF Express.

Providing video evidence of the package both during sending and receiving, Mr. Shi's plea captured the attention of many across the country.

The video, depicting the package's arrival in Guangzhou, showed a woman opening the outer packaging and discovering the absence of the precious timepiece.

The missing Rolex, valued at almost RMB380,000, had not been insured during shipment, prompting SF Express to offer only a RMB1,000 compensation, an amount Mr. Shi found unacceptable.

In response to the incident, Mr. Shi promptly reported the case to the police, asserting his simple demand: "Either return the watch to me or compensate me for its actual value."

Case Solved!

On August 1, SF Express issued a statement revealing that the missing watch had been successfully recovered. 

Furthermore, the investigation indicated that the responsibility did not lie with the SF Express delivery personnel.

According to the statement, the package with the tracking number SF1159XXXXX1637 was dispatched from Yanji City, Jilin Province, to Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province. 

After the customer signed for the package, it was reported that the contents were missing. 

A thorough investigation into the matter revealed that an external party was involved. 

As of now, the watch has been retrieved, and the SF Express delivery personnel were not held responsible.

Mystery Remains

Despite SF Express' explanation, many have raised concerns and questions, such as "How could an external party gain access to the package?" and "How could one even know what is inside the package?"

China's Express Delivery Loss Rate at 2%

Monitoring data from China Post indicated that in 2022, the total volume of express delivery reached a staggering 110.58 billion packages. 

A Baidu report on the development of the express delivery industry in the same year showed a concerning loss rate of 2%.

A 2% loss rate indicates a considerable probability, amounting to approximately 2.2 billion lost packages in 2022, raising serious concerns.

Local lawyers in Guangzhou have pointed out that claiming compensation for lost packages is often a challenging process due to two main reasons: 

Claimants need to provide substantial evidence of the loss

The compensation process can be lengthy

For packages with lower values, most recipients often choose not to pursue claims.
